THE INFORMATION BELOW CONTAINS SPOILERS

Hir is a wildly funny comedy but also contains elements which, while presented humorously, could be offensive or triggering to some audience members.

Hir contains strong profanity throughout the play, along with discussions of sex, sexuality, and descriptions of domestic violence and rape.

DETAILS

  • A character uses a spray bottle throughout the play to deter a stroke victim with cognitive disabilities from certain undesired behaviors.

  • Mention of estrogen being given to a character who can’t give consent to keep them “docile” and mention of estrogen causing a character to grow “tits/breasts.”

  • Use of slur “tranny” which is rebuked by another character. 

  • Ironic use of racial and queer slurs. Reappropriated usage of the words “queer” and “faggot.”

  • Mention of testosterone use resulting in enlarging of the “clitoris,” which causes a character to become physically ill and vomit comedically.

  • A character with PTSD and drug addiction becomes physically ill and vomits comedically upon hearing that their sibling is transgender, again when they see their sibling, and again at the mention of that character having an enlarged clitoris/penis. The sibling character does not feel acceptance when this happens.

  • A character grabs their crotch and says the word “dick.”

  • A character rubs their own body and breasts in a non-sexual manner.

  • A supportive cis parent discusses the use of neopronouns, ze and hir and how to use them correctly.

  • Discussion of drug use and addiction (meth) 

  • Discussion of pornography and increase in masturbation desires a character is experiencing is a result of testosterone use. 

  • A character with cognitive disabilities from a stroke holds their penis through their clothes from time to time throughout the play. This action is faked on stage.

  • A character slaps the hand of a character with cognitive disabilities who cries comedically.

  • A character grabs their sibling and pushes them against the wall and holds and holds their throat with one hand while raising the other as if to strike them.

  • During a puppet show, cartoon-like characters engage in sex acts. Sexually suggestive cartoons are displayed.

  • Visual evidence of domestic violence is revealed on the set (holes in walls that have been punched or had a body thrown against it).

  • A character with cognitive disabilities is comedically spanked while crying.

  • A character describes domestic and sexual violence they have experienced. Use of the word “rape.”

  • During a scuffle, a character is purposefully elbowed in their nose, which later bleeds.

  • A character smashes an air conditioner violently with a baseball bat.
