WSSR MURAL WALL
SEEKING STREET ART MURAL PROPOSALS FROM BIPOC ARTISTS
On June 14th, 2020 Rodrigo Ceballos painted a BLACK LIVES MATTER mural on the dam at Aldeen Park in Rockford, IL and encouraged people to add personal messages to it.
“Love Each Other”
“My Students Lives Matter”
“Black Is Beautiful”
“Drop The Charges”
“We All Bleed The Same Color”
Less than two months later, our community’s outpouring of passion and grief was sandblasted away.
STREET ART AND GRAFFITI ARE IMPORTANT ART FORMS
These contemporary artworks represent voices in our community which are not normally heard. WSSR knows that no work is permanent— but the way this particular work was erased was surprising and hurtful.
One way the WSSR can help is to open our walls to proposals from artists of color.
